Chankharpool KillingsEx-DMP Commissioner Habib, two others get death penalty

The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced three people, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people, including Anas, at Chankharpool in the capital during the July mass uprising.

The other two sentenced to death are former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, former Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna zone.

The verdict was delivered at around 12:30pm on Monday by a three-member judicial panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder.

The other members of the panel were Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.

A total of eight people were accused in the case, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman. Of them, four remain absconding. The remaining accused were produced before the tribunal from jail in the morning under tight security. They are former Shahbagh Police Station inspector (operations) Md Arshad Hossain, constable Md Sujan Mia, Md Imaz Hossain Emon and Md Nasirul Islam.

Apart from Habibur Rahman, the other absconding convicts are former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Ramna zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam, and former Ramna zone Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Imrul.

The first four accused are yet to be arrested and tried in absentia.

The prosecution filed the formal charge against all eight accused on 25 May 2025, marking the first formal charge filed at the ICT in cases arising from the July-August mass uprising.
