Actions will be taken for showdown during nomination submission: EC

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed today said if anyone carries out showdown during submission of nomination papers for the 11th parliamentary election, legal action will be taken against him or her.

“Ministers and members of parliament have to go to Returning Officer (RO)
offices for submitting nomination papers by their private cars lowering the
country flag. No candidate can be accompanied by more than five to seven
people during nomination paper submission,” he said at a press conference at
the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area.

No candidate except the party chiefs can use helicopter for election
purpose, the EC secretary said, adding, “But they will not be allowed to drop
leaflets from the helicopter”.

Mentioning that the EC has information that showdowns were carried out
before submitting nomination papers at some places, Helaluddin said, “We,
however, already have directed the ROs, executive magistrates and law
enforcement agencies to take legal action against the violators of electoral
code of conduct”.

He also said the EC did not impose any restriction on the returning
officers over talking with mass media.
