Bus hits stationary truck in Mirsharai, 3 killed

Three people were killed and at least eight others injured when a passenger bus rammed into the rear of a stationary timber-laden truck in Chattogram’s Mirsharai upazila.

The accident occurred around 2am on Thursday in the Dhomghat Forest Office area of Baraiyarhat Municipality on Dhaka–Chattogram highway.

The deceased were identified as Nafiz Ahmed Ayan (18), son of Nur Alam of Masjidia area in Mirsharai; Sabitun Nahar (25), daughter of Md Helal from Chandgaon thana in Chattogram city; and Mintu Mia (45), son of the late Naya Bepari of Phulchhari thana in Gaibandha. Among them, Nafiz Ahmed Ayan was a member of the Bangladesh Navy.

According to police and Fire Service officials, a truck carrying timber was standing on the highway late at night. At that time, a Dhaka-bound double-decker sleeper bus of Saint Martin Travels lost control and crashed into the back of the truck. The impact severely damaged the bus, causing passengers to be thrown inside the vehicle and sustain serious injuries.

Fire Service and police personnel rescued the injured passengers and rushed them to Mirsharai Health Complex, where doctors declared three of them dead.

Sub-Inspector Borhan Uddin of Jorarganj Highway Police Station said several others were injured and are receiving treatment at different hospitals. The damaged bus and truck have been recovered and taken into police custody. The truck driver fled the scene following the accident.

Legal procedures are underway, and the bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their families after completion of formalities.
