200 new oaches to increase train services: Railway Minister
Road Transport and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has announced that Bangladesh will acquire 200 broad gauge coaches from India under a project funded by the European Investment Bank.
During a parliamentary session on Thursday (April 9), the Minister shared the following key details:
The new coaches are expected to join the Bangladesh Railway fleet between June 2026 and December 2027.
Once the coaches arrive, the government plans to increase the number of intercity trains, particularly on routes connecting Dhaka to northern districts, which currently operate 15 intercity services.
The country's current rail network spans 3,428.9 km, consisting of meter gauge (1,591.43 km), broad gauge (1,066.60 km), and dual gauge (770.06 km).
The Minister emphasized that the expansion of the broad gauge and dual gauge networks is ongoing to modernize the country's railway system.
