TIN certificate now enough to get credit card

Return filing will no longer be mandatory for obtaining a credit card. Instead, submission of a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) certificate will be sufficient for accessing 12 types of services, including credit cards.

This announcement was made on Monday by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025–26.

The economic adviser also proposed several other measures:

> Exemption from return filing has been granted to funds, orphanages, shelters, and institutions established for religious purposes.

> Withholding tax return submissions, which were previously required monthly, will now be allowed on a quarterly basis.

> In cases of transfer of land or structures with land, if any amount in excess of the deed value is received, such excess must be verifiable through bank statements or documentation. Taxes applicable on capital gains must be paid on this additional amount.

> Audit-related provisions have been revised to eliminate field-level complexities arising from self-assessed return audits and to make the audit process more effective and simplified.
