Tk200cr proposed for blue economy research

In a move to harness the vast potential of the country’s marine resources, the interim government has proposed an allocation of Tk200 crore for research on the blue economy in the national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed announced this during a pre-recorded budget speech aired on Monday.

He highlighted the significance of science and technology in driving sustainable development and innovation in the country.

“To encourage and inspire scientific research and development, special research grants amounting to Tk16.66 crore were provided to 492 projects across various universities in the current fiscal year (2024–25),” Dr. Ahmed said.

He further stated, “Considering the importance of scientific research in achieving our developmental goals, I propose a Tk200 crore allocation in FY26 to support research into the blue economy—particularly in areas of basic scientific study, sustainable exploitation of marine resources, and their effective management.”

The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources to drive economic growth, improve livelihoods, and create jobs, while safeguarding the health of marine ecosystems. It includes key sectors such as fisheries, maritime transport, tourism, and ocean-based renewable energy.
