World Osteoporosis DayOsteoporosis on the rise in Bangladesh, experts urge awareness
Osteoporosis is emerging as a serious public health concern in Bangladesh as experts warn of a rapid increase in patients suffering from the “silent bone disease.”
Health professionals stress that greater awareness, early diagnosis, and lifestyle changes are crucial to prevent the disease and protect vulnerable groups—particularly women and the elderly—from severe bone complications.
With the theme “It's Unacceptable! Stop the Neglect of Bone Health,” Radiant Pharmaceuticals observed World Osteoporosis Day on Monday by organising a rally in front of the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. A seminar was also held at the NITOR auditorium ahead of the rally.
Speakers at the seminar said malnutrition, unhealthy lifestyles, and increased life expectancy are driving the rise in osteoporosis cases. Over 5 million people in Bangladesh currently suffer from osteoporosis-related complications, with people above 65 being the most affected and women at higher risk than men.
They described osteoporosis as a “silent killer,” often undetected until a fracture occurs, and emphasised that awareness and timely treatment are key to prevention. Experts advised daily exposure to sunlight for Vitamin D, balanced meals rich in protein and essential nutrients, and regular light exercise to maintain bone strength.
They also cautioned against smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, noting that a conscious lifestyle and early medical consultation can significantly reduce risks.
The seminar was chaired by Prof Md Abul Kenan, Director of NITOR. Other speakers included Md Saidur Rahman and Md Rajib Mahmud, Registrars of NITOR.
Senior physicians and faculty members from NITOR and representatives from Radiant Pharmaceuticals, including Brand Managers Md Mamunur Rashid and Mohsina Mahmud, also attended the event.
