Shafeenul Islam new BGB DG

Major General Md Shafeenul Islam has been appointed as new director general (DG) of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

In this regard, public administration ministry issued an order on Tuesday.

Gen Shafeenul, who now is chairman of Bangladesh Tea Board, has succeeded Major General Abul Hossain, who was recently brought back to the army ahead of his retirement.

Gen Abul took charge of the BGB in November 2016.

The ministry also named Major General Md Jahangir Al Mustahidur Rahman as the new Bangladesh Tea Board chairman.

Md Shafeenul Islam commissioned in 1986 in the Corps of Infantry, 51-year old Maj Gen Shafeenul, a two-star general, had been serving at the Tea Board since February 2017.

He was praised by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, among others, for his efforts to diversify tea products.

The prime minister spoke about the measures he had taken to use tea in making pickles and cosmetic products at the opening session of Bangladesh Tea Expo in Dhaka on Feb 18.

Born in Joypurhat in 1966, Maj Gen Shafeenul joined Bangladesh Military Academy in 1984.

He graduated from Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur with honours in defence service command and completed masters from the National University.
