BFUJ President Ruhul Amin Gazi passes away


Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) President Ruhul Amin Gazi passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night. He was 68.

Gazi, who was suffering from various health complications, breathed his last around 9pm while undergoing treatment at BRB Hospitals Limited, confirmed BNP Health Affairs Secretary Rafiqul Islam.

The Daily Sangram chief reporter and journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi was admitted to the hospital recently in a critical condition.

Gazi’s family said he was under close observation of doctors in the intensive care unit of BRB Hospitals Ltd in Dhaka’s Panthapath over the past two days.

The veteran journalist had been suffering from ailments including kidney complications, high diabetes, back pain, and salt deficiency for a long time.

His family said Gazi was taken to Shahjalal International Airport at 2:45 am on Sunday after being advised to receive advanced treatment in Thailand. But he was brought back to the hospital as he was denied permission to fly. His condition deteriorated after Monday afternoon.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

Fellow journalists will pay last respect to Gazi at the National Press Club in Dhaka at 12 pm on Wednesday.

He will be buried at Shahjahanpur graveyard in the capital following a funeral prayer for him at the venue, according to his family.

Born in Chandpur in 1953, Gazi started his career as a reporter at the Daily Ittefaq in 1974. He moved to the Daily Sangram later and served in several key roles, including special correspondent and chief reporter, until his passing.

Alongside journalism, Gazi was always vocal in the movement for the rights of media workers. He was elected as president of BFUJ and DUJ.
