CSA case filed in Chittagong over Quran insult, defamation of Prof Yunus

A case has been filed against a 52-year-old man in Chittagong under Cyber Security Act for allegedly insulting the Quran and posting a social media video targeting Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, Information Adviser Nahid Islam, and the army chief.

The complaint was lodged by Hafez Md Saifuddin, joint convener of Fatikchari Upazila Chhatra Dal, at the Chittagong Cyber Tribunal on Tuesday, according to Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, public prosecutor (PP) of the Cyber Tribunal.

The court accepted the case filed under the Cyber Security Act and directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate and submit a report by November 27.

The accused, identified as Moktar Hossain, is the son of the late Delowar Hossain and resides in West Nanupur village in Fatikchari Upazila, Chittagong.

According to the case statement, on August 15, Moktar allegedly posted a video on his Facebook ID, MD Hassan, lasting 7 minutes and 37 seconds. At the 34-second mark, he is accused of making derogatory comments about the Holy Quran.

The video reportedly contains verbal abuse directed at Dr Muhammad Yunus at 1 minute and 42 seconds, insults toward students of the anti-discrimination movement at 1 minute and 57 seconds, and obscene remarks about Nahid Islam at 2 minutes and 34 seconds.

Further allegations indicate that offensive comments were made against the army chief in the video.

Plaintiff Hafez Md Saifuddin expressed his shock at the incident, saying: “In addition to the offensive remarks about the Quran, insults were also directed at Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and Information Adviser Nahid Islam. I was deeply shocked by this incident, which is why I decided to file the case in court.”
