Additional SP, executive magistrate arrested in genocide case


A police official in Rangamati and an executive magistrate in Narsingdi have been arrested in a case filed with the International Crimes Tribunal over their involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

ICT Prosecutor (Administration) Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim confirmed the matter on Monday in a text message sent to the media.

The arrestees are – Rangamati Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Anirban Chowdhury and Narsingdi Senior Assistant Commissioner (executive magistrate) Md Saiful Islam. Warrants for their arrest were issued earlier.

On Sunday, the police took Anirban from the office of the Rangamati SP into its custody for interrogation. He was shown arrested on Monday.

A member of the 30th BCS police cadre, Anirban started his career as the assistant superintendent of police. In 2022, he joined Narsingdi police as an additional SP and was working there during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July and August last year.

On 7 October, he joined his new workplace in Rangamati and was serving there till his arrest.

Meanwhile, Saiful Islam, a cadre of the 37th BCS (administration), is serving as a senior assistant commissioner and executive magistrate.
