5 JMB operatives charged with Sholakia blast case

Five militants were charge-sheeted in connection with the case regarding suicide bomb blasts at Sholakia Maidan in Kishoreganj district on July 7, 2016.

However, 19 others accused of the case, who were killed in assaults of law enforcers at different times, were excluded from the charge-sheet.

Inspector (investigation) of Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station and Investigation Officer of the blast case Arifur Rahman submitted the charge-sheet before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1, Kishoreganj this afternoon.

All the charge-sheeted accused, Zahidul Haque Tanim, Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan, Anwar Hossain, Jahangir alias Rajib Gandhi, and Abdus Sabur Khan Hasan alias Sohel Mahfuz, are members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). All of them are now in jails. Of the five accused, Tanim was present on the spot during the attack.

The acquitted people include Shariful Islam Don, Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, Nurul Islam Marzan, Sarwar Jahan, Basharuzzaman alias Choklet, Maj (retd) Zahidul, Rohan Imtiaz, Nirbas, Mobassher, Khairul Islam, Shafiqul Islam Uzzal, Raihanuzzaman Kabir, Saddam Hossain, Tanvir Kaderi, Mahfuzur Rahman, Baik Hasan, Badar and Zahidul Islam Akash.

“We have found involvement of 24 militants in the attack. But five of them were accused in the charge-sheet as 19 others were acquitted of the charges as they were killed in various assaults of the law enforcers,” investigation officer of the case Arifur Rahman told BSS today.

“All the operatives of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were accused of carrying out terrorist activities, involving in the plot, giving support and shelters and directly taking part in the attack,” he added.

Of the accused, Rajib Gandhi and Sohel Mahfuz gave confessional statements under section 164 before the court. Both Rajib and Sohel were also included in the list of accused in the charge-sheet of Holey Artisan Cafe attack case.

In his statement, Rajib Gandhi confessed that the New-JMB had taken preparations to carry out two large-scale bomb attacks (at Holey Artisan Cafe, at Gulshan in the capital and Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj) mainly to upset the government and attract the attention of international militant organisations.

Police during investigation found that JMB front ranking leaders Tamim Chowdhury, Major Zahid, Akash, Abir and Don separately visited the place of occurrence one day (July 6, 2016) ahead of the attack on July 7, 2016, around a week after the Holey Artisan Cafe attack.

Four people, including two policemen, a woman, and a suspected assailant,
were killed in the attack.
