Shahriar Kabir arrested

Shahriar Kabir, president of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, has been arrested in Dhaka.

The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Tejgaon arrested Shahriar, a journalist, filmmaker, human rights activist and author, at his home in Banani at around 12:30am on Tuesday.

He will be produced in court later in the day.

Banani police station Officer-in-Charge Rasel Sarwar said Shahriar was currently in DB custody.

On August 20, Mufti Harun Izhar Chowdhury, Hefazat-e-Islam’s joint secretary, filed a complaint over allegations of crimes against humanity and mass killing with the International Crimes Tribunal.

These accusations were made against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 23 others in connection with a Hefazat-e-Islam rally on May 5, 2013, at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel. One of the accused is Shahriar Kabir.

Additionally, he was also named as an accused in a murder case filed over the death of student Imran Hossain in Kutubkhali, Jatrabari, on August 5.

Shahriar Kabir formed the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee in 1992. The committee is a pressure group founded to demand the trial of war criminals from the Bangladesh Liberation War.
