Govt appoints administrator to BCCCI
The government has appointed an administrator to the Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) to conduct a fair and neutral election.
Mst Nargis Murshida, a joint secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, took charge of the BCCCI on Sunday according to an order issued by the ministry on 16 March.
The order instructed the newly appointed administrator to conduct a fair and neutral election for the BCCCI board within 120 days and then hand over the leadership to the elected committee.
After the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024 amid a mass uprising, the then BCCCI president, Gazi Golam Murtoza, went into hiding.
The BCCCI incorporated in 2003 has a total of 750 members. Of them, 550 members are from Chinese firms in Bangladesh. Thye want a free, fair, and neutral election soon to elect dynamic business leaders at the chamber to strengthen trade ties between Bangladesh and China.
Bilateral trade between the two countries stood at $18.5 billion in FY2022-23. Of the trade volume, Bangladesh imported products worth $17.8 billion from China, according to the Export Promotion Bureau and the Bangladesh Bank.
