‘Secret’ meeting of police officers sparks concern, probe

A meeting involving around 50 police officers has triggered concern within the Home Ministry and the police department, leading to an investigation.

Intelligence agencies have provided video footage of the 14 March gathering, held during an iftar party at the Police Officers' Mess at Eskaton Garden in the capital.

The Police Headquarters has subsequently issued letters to several officers, asking for explanations as to why departmental action will not be taken against them for holding such a secret meeting, said sources.

Deputy Inspector General (Administration) of the Police Headquarters Kazi Fazlul Karim spoke as the chief guest at the iftar party.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Faruk Ahmed, DIG Mir Ashraf of the Special Branch of police and Rangpur Range DIG Aminul Islam were among the attendees.

On 16 March, a letter signed by Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam was sent to the GMP commissioner asking for an explanation for his participation in the event after leaving the duty station without prior authorisation.

“There is no record that you took permission from the Police Headquarters to leave your duty station and come to Dhaka. Your behaviour is against the discipline of the force and a sign of misconduct. Therefore, you are directed to submit a written reply within three working days of receipt of this letter.”

Similar explanations were sought from other officers who participated in the event.

Several officers who participated in the meeting said discussions focused on restoring the efficiency of the police force and strengthening the leadership.

They discussed the need for the swift appointment of qualified officers to vacant positions, they claimed.
