Epicentre of 3.3 magnitude quake was in Narsingdi’s Palash, not Baipail: BMD

The mild earthquake that struck on Saturday morning was not centred in Baipail of Savar, as initially reported, but in Palash upazila of Narsingdi.

Around 1:00 pm, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) announced that the epicentre of the 3.3 magnitude quake was in Baipail of Ashulia, Savar.

However, at about 4:00pm, the agency revised its statement, confirming that the tremor actually originated in Palash, Narsingdi.

Officials said the earlier announcement was the result of an analytical error.

Except for the corrected epicentre, all other details remain unchanged.

The earthquake occurred at 10:36am and measured 3.3 on the Richter scale.

BMD meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir admitted the mistake, explaining that there had been a problem in their analysis.

“It was not in Baipail. The 3.3 magnitude tremor occurred at 10:36am in Palash, Narsingdi,” he said.

The incident follows a stronger earthquake felt across the country on Friday morning.
