On China–Bangladesh relationChinese Embassy refutes US ambassador’s remarks
The Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh has strongly refuted recent remarks made by the newly appointed US ambassador to Bangladesh concerning China’s role and influence in South Asia.
China called the recent comments made by US envoy Brent Christensen; irresponsible and unfounded.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy rejected the US ambassador’s reported claims that Washington is concerned about China’s broader influence in the region and plans to warn Bangladesh about the risks of engaging with China in certain sectors.
The spokesperson said such remarks confuse right and wrong and are driven by ulterior motives.
Highlighting the long-standing ties between the two countries, the embassy noted that over the past 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations; China and Bangladesh have consistently supported each other, treated one another as equals and pursued win-win cooperation.
According to the statement, China–Bangladesh cooperation has brought tangible benefits to the people of both countries and has received broad public support, while also contributing to regional development and stability.
The spokesperson emphasised that cooperation between China and Bangladesh is a bilateral matter between the two countries and their peoples and does not warrant interference or finger-pointing from the United States or any other external party.
The Chinese Embassy further urged the US side to act responsibly and focus on steps that promote Bangladesh’s stability and regional development and cooperation, rather than making what it described as baseless and divisive comments.
