Bringing discipline in transport sector is biggest challenge: Quader

Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said bringing discipline in transport sector, by reducing traffic congestion, is now the biggest challenge in the ‘second innings’ of his life.

When Quader joined his office today after returning home from Singapore with full recovery of his health, he got a warm reception by the officials of his ministry at the Secretariat at 10 am.

“I have competed the first innings of my life. Inshallah, now I will play second innings. The biggest challenge of my second innings is to bring discipline in transport sector and cut traffic congestion. And I hope I would be able to do so under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he told a press briefing at the conference room of his ministry.

The minister said with the grace of almightily Allah, the sincere endeavor of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the prayers of people, he returned home after taking treatment for two months and a half in Singapore.

About the conditions of the country’s roads and highways, he said the roads and highways are in a better condition than that were a few years ago.

Quader said the Prime Minister will inaugurate the second Gumti and second Meghna bridges on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway through a videoconference on May 25.

Noting that the construction work of four underpasses in Dhaka-Tangail highway will be completed soon, he said more buses and trucks will be added to the BRTC fleet, which will ease the journey of home-goers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Quader said the sale of advance tickets of BRTC busses will begin tomorrow and now there is no bus crisis in the country.

About the state of his treatment, the AL general secretary said he will fly to Singapore on July 16 for his medical check-up.

“I feel confident mentally and hope that I would be totally okay within a few months after taking proper care and rest,” he said.

Earlier, on March 3, Quader was admitted to BSMMU hospital with a breathing problem. Later, he was diagnosed with three blockages in the coronary arteries and was flown to Singapore the next day for a better treatment under supervision of the Prime Minister.

He underwent a bypass surgery there on March 20 and returned home on May 15.
