Political power, people’s support needed to retain developing country status

Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has emphasized the need to expand political power and organizational strength apart from the people's mandate to retain the recognition of developing country status.

"To retain the status of a developing country, we need political power mostly, we need the organization and we need the support from the people," she said.

The premier said this while delivering her speech at a joint meeting of Awami League Advisory Council and the Central Working Committee at her official residence Ganabhaban on Friday,

She said the government’s resilience and strength in putting Bangladesh in the current position stems from the people of the country and their support.

"The way Bangladesh is advancing, I think we need to build up the organizations more strongly," she said.

In this connection, she reckons that while Awami League was in the opposition, it developed plans as a political party on how to advance the country.

"We have to take preparations and move forward gradually. We must put behind memories of difficulties and hardship, in order to consolidate Awami League stronger, we need to build public consensus," she said.

The prime minister said development narratives and tested knowledge in promoting better governance in the country need sharing in a coordinated way that will help the country move forward.

Over the past ten years, the prime minister said the government continued its development trends at a considerable pace.

"We never stumbled on our way to development. This is the most important thing," she said.

Criticizing a section of the society, the premier said they always down play the government's achievement in a typical way.

Talking about recent rains and the possibility of floods, Sheikh Hasina said the government is well aware of the situation. "We are collecting information from different parts of the country," she emphasized.

Sheikh Hasina also asked party leaders and activists to remain in full preparedness to deal with possible floods in the country.
