ACC seizes assets worth Tk10,000cr from AL men in 6 months
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) claims to have seized assets worth Tk 10,310 crore illegally accumulated by Awami League leaders and activists within the country along with Tk 165 crore abroad over the past six months.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhter Hossain made the announcement during a conference held at the commission’s Segunbaghicha office in Dhaka on Monday.
The commission seized the assets from the possessions of many influential ministers of the ousted Awami League Government, including Anisul Haque and Junaid Ahmed Palak, he said.
UNB adds: Similarly, ACC seized assets of S Alam Group, which is accused of looting thousands of crores of taka in the banking sector, and Bashundhara Group, which is accused of various irregularities. The ACC is already seizing their assets in the country and abroad.
Since the change of government, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been active in seizing the assets of corrupt politicians and businessmen amassed during the previous government.
ACC data for the past six months shows that the court has ordered the seizure of assets worth Tk 10,310 crore in the country and Tk 165 crore abroad in 74 orders.
However, former ACC Director General Moidul Islam believes that it should be investigated whether the seizure of assets abroad is actually being implemented.
Today, the ACC filed a case against former Khulna-6 MP Md. Akhtaruzzaman on charges of acquiring illegal assets worth about TK 3.5 crore.
The agency's Assistant Director Md. Shahidur Rahman filed the case, he said.
According to the investigation, information has been found on Akhtaruzzaman's assets worth TK 13.47 crore while Tk 3.47 crore was found legal income assets.
A case has been filed against him under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act on this allegation.
A case has also been filed against former Dhaka South City Corporation councillor Akash Kumar Bhowmik, ward number 59, and his wife.
