Tk 1,498 cr to be spent for development of sports

The government has allocated Tk 1,498 crore for the Youth and Sports Ministry in the proposed budget for fiscal year 2018-19, Tk 307 crore up from the revised budget of the last fiscal year.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith disclosed this while presenting the national budget for the new financial year at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

Of the total allocation, Tk 1,193 crore will be spent for the operating purpose and the rest of Tk 305 crore for the development sector.

In the revised budget for fiscal year of 2017-18, an allocation of Tk 965 was kept for the operating purpose while Tk 226 crore for the development purpose.

In his budget speech, Muhith said, "Our efforts for making the country's youth a skilled workforce and generating employment for them by providing proper education and training are continuing."

"At the same time, we have continued working to find talents in sports from the grassroots level, create skilled players through intensive training, undertake sports development programmes for trainee sportswomen and establish appropriate sports infrastructures," he further said.

The Finance Minister said women have already made commendable success in cricket and football with the government's encouragement and incentives.
