Iran announces alternative route for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has announced alternative shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz due to the high risk of underwater sea mines in the main channel. This decision follows a temporary two-week ceasefire agreement between Tehran and the United States, intended to reopen the vital waterway through which approximately 20% of the world's crude oil is transported.
New Navigation Guidelines:
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy issued a specific navigation plan to ensure maritime safety:
-
Inbound Route: Vessels entering the Persian Gulf from the Sea of Oman must pass through the northern side of Larak Island.
-
Outbound Route: Vessels departing the Persian Gulf must navigate via the southern side of Larak Island.
The IRGC emphasized that all ships must coordinate closely with their naval forces and adhere to these designated paths to avoid potential collisions with mines. While the two-week truce has provided a fragile window for trade, the main shipping lanes remain hazardous, and global energy markets continue to monitor the situation closely as U.S. forces remain on high alert in the region.
