Super Cyclone ‘Yash’ likely to hit Sundarbans between May 23-25

The Regional Meteorological Department of India has forecasted that Super Cyclone ‘Yash’ is likely to make landfall in the Sundarbans areas between May 23 and May 25 which, then, may possibly move towards Bangladesh.

The Indian Met Office also warned that the ferocity of ‘Yash’ may cause equal devastation as ‘Amphan’ that ravaged the Bay of Bengal adjoining areas in May 2020.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s latest forecast bulletin said a low-pressure area was likely to form over the Bay of Bengal by the end of the week.

Indian officials reckon that the storm might move towards Bangladesh after entering land through the Indian part of the Sundarbans and a warning to the fishers has been issued asking them not to venture to the sea on May 23.

The department officials said that because of the formation of the depression, the temperature is increasing in the areas of Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas and it is likely to increase further.

The humidity and temperature in the region have been in recent days and likely to get even higher as a result of the depression, according to an Indian Met official.

A mild to moderate heatwave is also sweeping over several parts of Bangladesh including the Khulna and Barishal divisions and the regions of Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalgonj, Sitakunda, Rangamati, Cumilla, Chandpur, Feni, Noakhali, Rajshahi and Pabna, said the Bangladesh Met Office forecast, adding that the heatwave might continue two to three more days.
