US embassy issues security alert ahead of elections

The US Embassy has urged American citizens in Bangladesh to avoid all forms of demonstrations and exercise caution near any large gatherings ahead of the national elections on 12 February.

The alert was issued on Monday, December 15.

“US citizens should practice vigilance and remember that demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence,” the embassy said in the security alert issued Monday.

The embassy also advised US nationals to remain aware of their surroundings, monitor local media regularly, and stay away from crowds.

In case of emergencies, citizens were advised to contact the US Embassy in Dhaka or the US Department of State’s Consular Affairs and to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program for security updates.

According to the Election Commission, the parliamentary election and referendum are scheduled for February 12. The embassy warned that as the election approaches, political activities may become more frequent and intense.
