Police officer killed, two others shot in separate Dhaka incidents

A Special Branch (SB) police officer was beaten to death in Savar, while a businessman and a housewife were shot in two separate incidents in the capital on Saturday night.

SB Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain was beaten to death following an argument over the parking of a private car, while businessman Md Aslam Khan was shot inside his shop in Shonir Akhra and housewife Jesmin Begum was shot at her home in Darus Salam.

SB SI killed over parking dispute

In Savar, SI Altaf Hossain and his younger son, Ariful Islam, 26, got into an argument with 10 to 15 people over parking a private car in front of a garment factory in the Barodeshi area of Aminbazar Union around 8:30pm on Saturday. The dispute turned violent, leaving Altaf dead and his son seriously injured.

Altaf, an SB officer serving in Dhaka, lived with his family in a rented house in the Madina City area of Barodeshi.

Savar model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam said police had arrested Jahirul Islam, believed to be the owner of the private car involved. Others allegedly involved have also been identified, but their names were withheld for the sake of the investigation,” he said.

“The attackers beat the police officer to death. We are conducting drives to arrest everyone involved,” the OC added.

Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parvin said a minor dispute over car parking near Altaf’s residence led to the attack.

Businessman shot inside shop

Meanwhile, businessman Md Aslam Khan, 40, was shot inside Lucky’s Cookeries in front of Royal Hospital in Shonir Akhra under Kadamtali police station around 8:20pm.

His friend Monowar Hossain said an unidentified young man suddenly entered the shop and opened fire. Aslam suffered bullet injuries below his left knee and on the right side of his forehead. He was first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9pm in critical condition.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Wari Division) Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami said Local people chased and detained the alleged attacker. Later, they handed over the attacker to police. Initially the attacker was identified as Manjurul Islam. Police recovered two foreign pistols, nine rounds of ammunition and a spent bullet casing from him.

The motive behind the attack was still unclear, he added.

Family dispute behind woman’s shooting

In another incident, housewife Jesmin Begum, 38, was shot at her rented tin-shed home on Matbarbari Mosque Lane in Darus Salam around 8:30pm. She was first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and later admitted to DMCH around 11pm. She remains under treatment.

Jesmin’s husband, Md Abdul Mannan alias Abdul Hannan, 45, allegedly shot her while drunk following an argument. RAB arrested Mannan around 3:30am on Sunday and recovered 215 yaba tablets, said RAB-4 Commander Lt Col Md Hafizur Rahman.

During interrogation, Mannan allegedly said he had handed the firearm to his son, Md Rakib, 25, to hide. A joint team of RAB-4 and Darus Salam Police later arrested Rakib and his friend Md Hatim Mia, 21, and recovered a pistol, a magazine and two rounds of live ammunition from Hatim’s house.

RAB said the firearm was used to shoot Jesmin. Hatim was accused of helping conceal the weapon.

Hafizur Rahman said Mannan was a notorious drug dealer and had been involved in armed criminal activities. He has three previous cases filed with different police stations, according to RAB.

Attacks on police continue

On Friday, at least six police personnel, including Khulshi police station OC Mohammad Abdur Rahim and his bodyguard, were injured while trying to arrest listed top criminal Wakil Hossain alias Boga, 42, in Chattogram’s Wireless Intersection and Pahartali areas. A government police vehicle was also vandalised.

Earlier, on August 18, at least 30 people, including police personnel, were injured in clashes between police and madrasa students over a cultural programme and music at Brahmanbaria Police Lines.

Police Headquarters data show that 359 attacks on police were reported nationwide between January and July this year, including 42 in Dhaka. A total of 601 such attacks were recorded throughout 2025.

Police Headquarters Assistant Inspector General (Media) AHM Shahadat Hossain said public cooperation with police was necessary to maintain normal law and order and ensure proper enforcement of the law.

“Any obstruction to police duties will hamper the proper implementation and enforcement of the law,” he said.

University of Dhaka’s Criminology Department Chairman Prof Rezaul Karim Sohel said failure to bring offenders to justice allows similar crimes to recur.

“The failure to ensure punishment not only reduces public confidence in the police but also gives criminals greater confidence. Anyone who commits a crime must be brought under the law and punished. Otherwise, public trust in the justice system will decline further, and people may increasingly take the law into their own hands,” he said.
