30 killed after being trampled at a historic fort in Haiti
At least 30 people are feared dead following a tragic stampede at Haiti’s historic Citadelle Laferrière during an Easter celebration on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred during a large gathering of students and tourists commemorating the fort's founding, with the situation being exacerbated by sudden heavy rainfall that triggered a chaotic rush near the entrance.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed deep condolences and confirmed that an investigation is underway while emergency services assist the victims.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Haitian independence, the Citadelle is one of the nation's most iconic landmarks, making this tragedy a significant blow to the local community.
