The UK government has warned its citizens against all kinds of travel, except those deemed essential, to Bangladesh on concerns over an rise in violence ahead of the national elections on 12 February.

In a travel advisory issued Thursday, the government also urged British people already staying in Bangladesh to avoid large gatherings and other locations with a police or security presence.

“There is a threat of political violence and extremist attacks during the election period,” said the UK foreign ministry, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), on its website.

“The security situation in Bangladesh may change quickly with no advance warning.. They could also be indiscriminate,” it noted.

“Remain aware of your surroundings… Follow the advice of local authorities. Plan carefully and make sure you have alternative plans if faced with any disruption,” it said.

FCDO’s ability to provide assistance is severely limited in areas where it advises against travel, it further added.
